Whether you are running for a cause, joining a Halloween fun run, or heading out for your next personal challenge, preparation involves more than showing up at the starting line.
Comfortable shoes, realistic pacing, rest, and attention to how your body feels all deserve a place in your plan. Massage can fit into that picture, too—not as a shortcut to faster running, but as an opportunity to address muscular tension and support a comfortable recovery.
With several community events coming up, this is a good time to think about taking care of yourself before and after the finish line.
A Weekend of Local Running
The October 24–25 weekend offers several ways to get moving:
Saturday, October 24: The Ghostly Gallop 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run in Spring Mills offers a family-friendly event, with costumes encouraged and a flat course along Sinking Creek Road. oldgreggschool
Saturday, October 24: The Zombie Trail Fun Run in Tyrone offers another Halloween-themed option. Check the event information for participation details. runsignup
Sunday, October 25: The THON 5K brings runners and supporters together as part of the THON fundraising year. Check THON’s official updates for registration, location, and event-day instructions. thon
Whether your goal is a strong finish or simply enjoying the experience, give yourself permission to prepare—and recover—thoughtfully.
Start With Shoes That Fit You
Before thinking about pace or mileage, think about what is on your feet.
One local business I recommend is Rapid Transit Sports on South Allen Street in downtown State College. Its personalized approach to fitting running and walking shoes is a longstanding part of its reputation. The Nittany Valley Running Club also specifically recommends the store for matching shoes to individual runners. statecollege & nvrun
What I appreciate is the attention given to the person wearing the shoes—not just the sale. I absolutely love their top-notch customer service. Free professional fitting is included with your shoe-shopping visit! They have helped me find the best sneaker for the purpose many times over the years. Rather than choosing only by brand, appearance, or what works for a friend, you can get help finding a comfortable option for your feet and activities.
Visit Rapid Transit Sports to see their current brand and style availability.
Where Massage Fits Before an Event
In my practice, pre-event massage starts with a conversation: How soon is your event? What feels tight? Have you had massage before? How does your body usually respond?
My approach is firm but gentle. I work slowly, adjust pressure, and pay attention to your feedback rather than trying to force a result.
An appointment just before a race is not where I would experiment with unusually intense work or try to address every longstanding issue at once. If you are racing soon, tell me when and what you are doing so we can plan accordingly.
Massage is not a replacement for training, an appropriate warm-up, sleep, or medical assessment of an injury. It should fit your preparation—not become another physical challenge.
After the Finish Line
After your event, take time to settle down, eat, drink, rest, and notice how you feel.
Massage may be an option for post-exercise soreness. A systematic review of 29 studies found small improvements in delayed-onset muscle soreness and flexibility, but no evidence that sports massage directly improved strength, sprinting, or endurance. That makes recovery support a more realistic expectation than a performance boost. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih
When you come in after an event, we will adapt the session to your comfort. Sore muscles do not automatically need hard pressure, and tenderness is not an invitation to push harder.
New or concerning pain deserves appropriate evaluation, not an attempt to massage through it. Let me know about injuries, health conditions, and medications before your appointment; vigorous massage is not appropriate for everyone. nccih.nih
A Race-Weekend Thank-You
I will be available by appointment throughout the October 23–25 weekend at my studio inside East Coast Health & Fitness on Hamilton Avenue in State College.
To celebrate our local running community, participants in the THON 5K, Ghostly Gallop, or Zombie Trail Fun Run can receive 15 additional minutes at no extra charge when booking a massage service longer than 60 minutes.
Mention your event and the race-weekend offer when booking so I can reserve the additional time. Appointments and bonus time are subject to availability, and session length and pressure will be tailored to your needs.
Whether you are preparing to run or ready to unwind afterward, we can create a session that respects your comfort and goals.
